Italian Cuisine on the Verge of UNESCO Recognition

Italian food is inching closer to official recognition on the global stage. A proposal currently under review by UNESCO could see Italy’s traditional dishes added to the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, highlighting the nation’s culinary techniques, recipes, and dining traditions as cultural assets worth protecting.

The bid comes via a coordinated effort from Italy’s Ministries of Culture and Agriculture. A detailed dossier, overseen by Professor Pier Luigi Petrillo at LUISS Guido Carli University in Rome, has passed technical scrutiny, and UNESCO has granted initial approval. The final decision now rests with the Intergovernmental Committee, which will convene in New Delhi from December 8–13.

Francesco Lollobrigida, Italy’s Minister of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry, told Euronews, “It is wonderful to see the interest with which the recognition of Italian cuisine as a UNESCO heritage site is being followed. But we have not yet crossed this great and well-deserved finishing line.” (According to Euro News)

Italy is no stranger to UNESCO accolades. Manual bell-ringing, opera singing, the craft of glass bead making, and pizzaiolo—the art of pizza making—are all already listed as intangible cultural heritage. Adding Italian cuisine would extend this recognition from singular skills to the full spectrum of the country’s culinary identity.

For the food industry, the implications are significant. Official UNESCO recognition can boost gastronomic tourism, elevate artisanal producers, and reinforce traditional methods in an era of industrialized food production. If approved, Italian cuisine will join a select group of cultural practices that are formally protected for their societal and historical value, underscoring the global importance of culinary heritage
