Boar’s Head Issues Class I Cheese Recall Over Listeria Risk

Select Boar’s Head deli cheeses have been pulled from shelves over potential Listeria contamination, according to a voluntary recall issued by Ambriola Company, the third-party supplier behind these products.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) categorized this as a Class I recall—the highest alert level—covering two specific Boar’s Head items:

  • Boar’s Head Grated Pecorino Romano Cheese (6-ounce retail cups)
  • Boar’s Head Grated Pecorino Romano Cheese (food service-sized bags)

While not directly part of the recall, Boar’s Head also proactively removed all products supplied by Ambriola Company, including 7-ounce pre-cut Pecorino Romano wedges, “out of an abundance of caution.”

These cheeses were sold nationwide, including Tops and Big Y stores. The pre-cut wedges also found their way into packaged deli salads and wraps at Kroger stores in Kentucky and Indiana—items that have now been removed from shelves:

  • EverRoast Chicken Caesar Salad (UPC 850042244142)
  • EverRoast Chicken Caesar Wrap (UPC 85004224455)

Boar’s Head urges anyone who purchased the affected products to avoid consuming them. You can either throw the cheese away or return it to the store for a full refund.

In a company statement, Boar’s Head reassured customers:

“Boar’s Head took immediate action to halt the purchase of these products from The Ambriola Company, notify retail partners, and ensure that the affected products are being removed from distribution nationally.”

No other Boar’s Head products are affected.

Why Listeria Matters

Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, with symptoms like fever, headache, muscle aches, and gastrointestinal upset. More severe cases may include stiff neck, confusion, and convulsions. People over 65, newborns, pregnant individuals, and anyone with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk. If you notice any symptoms, contact your healthcare provider promptly.

While there are no confirmed illnesses linked to this recall, it’s a timely reminder to check for recalls.
