Camel Milk Cheese: A Taste Beyond the Ordinary

Cheese comes in all shapes, flavors, and milk sources—from cow and goat to buffalo—but few are as distinctive as camel milk cheese. Beyond its novelty, it offers a taste experience that’s truly different from what you usually find in the dairy aisle.

One of the most recognized examples is Caravane, often called “camelbert” for its soft, bloomy rind and creamy texture. Made in Mauritania, home to one of West Africa’s first camel milk dairies, Caravane combines camel milk with calcium phosphate and vegetable rennet. The result is a soft white cheese that balances salty and sweet notes while offering a surprisingly nutrient-rich profile. Compared to cow’s milk cheeses like cheddar or mozzarella, it’s lower in lactose—an appealing option for those looking for a diet-friendly choice without sacrificing flavor.

In its country of origin, Caravane is enjoyed in a variety of ways: with red wine, in desserts, as part of an appetizer platter, or even incorporated into dips and drinks. Another camel milk cheese to note is Kadchgall, giving curious cheese enthusiasts another option to explore.

The history behind these cheeses adds context to their rarity. Nancy Abeiderrahmane founded a camel dairy to make milk production safer for nomadic herders, and she began turning surplus milk into cheese. By 2008, American importers were cleared to bring it into the United States, introducing this unusual cheese to a small but growing audience. (According to The New York Times)

Camel milk cheese is a reminder that the world of cheese extends far beyond the familiar. With its creamy texture, gentle sweetness, and nutritional benefits, it’s a cheese worth sampling if you’re curious about flavors beyond the everyday.
