Cheese Recall Hits 20 States After Listeria Found, FDA Confirms

A multi-state cheese recall is underway after several grated Pecorino Romano products tested positive for listeria, according to an updated notice from federal regulators.

The Food and Drug Administration issued the latest update on January 6, expanding on a voluntary recall first announced by Ambriola Company in late November. Routine testing at the company’s West Caldwell, New Jersey facility detected listeria monocytogenes in certain products, triggering a wider advisory.

Products Involved

The recall includes multiple grated Pecorino Romano products packed under several brand names in both retail cups and bulk foodservice bags. Items listed in the update include:

  • Locatelli Grated Pecorino Romano (cups, bags, and shipper cases)
  • Pinna Grated Pecorino Romano (bulk bags)
  • Boar’s Head Grated Pecorino Romano (cups and bags)
  • Sam’s Pecorino Romano grated (bags)
  • Ambriola Piccante Pecorino Romano grated (bags)

All affected items correspond to specific lot numbers identified by the FDA.

States Affected

The recalled products were shipped to distributors and retailers in 20 states, including:

Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, Washington State and Wisconsin.

What Consumers Should Do

Consumers are advised not to eat the listed products. Items should be thrown out or returned to the place of purchase for a refund.
