Milton Creamery: Supporting Farmers, Creating Flavor
Milton Creamery: Supporting Farmers, Creating Flavor
Since opening its doors in 2006, Milton Creamery has become a cornerstone of Southern Iowa’s rich dairy tradition. Nestled among the region’s rolling hills, lush woodlands, and fertile pastures, the creamery has one mission: support local farmers, create meaningful jobs, and make cheeses that combine craftsmanship with passion.

A Family Dream Brought to Life
The story begins over 30 years ago when Rufus Sr. and Jane Musser left Pennsylvania for Milton, Iowa. After more than a decade of farming, they turned their dream of a creamery into reality. From the start, the Mussers committed to paying premium prices for local milk and offering fulfilling roles in their creamery and warehouse. Today, Rufus IV manages operations on the ground, Rufus Sr. showcases their cheeses nationwide, and Jane continues to lend her expertise whenever needed.
Local Farms, Exceptional Milk
The unique flavor of Milton cheeses starts with exceptional milk. They source from small Amish and Mennonite farms, each with under 120 cows, and a trusted larger herd roughly 85 miles away. All partner farms follow strict quality standards, avoiding artificial growth hormones and coloring, resulting in cheeses that are all-natural and better-for-you.
Southern Iowa’s loess hills, dotted with streams and rich pastures, give the cows’ diets—grasses, legumes, and wildflowers—distinctive character that comes through in every wheel and block.

Cheeses That Stand Out
Milton Creamery has built a reputation on cheeses that blend traditional craftsmanship with unique flavor profiles:
- Prairie Breeze™ – Aged at least nine months, this cheddar-style cheese surprises with sweet, nutty notes of pineapple and almond alongside the classic umami bite. Its fudgy texture and tyrosine crystals make it a versatile, sophisticated choice.
- Morning Harvest – With Swiss and German influences, this cheddar-style cheese offers a fruity aroma and creamy texture. Aged seven months, it melts beautifully and features subtle notes of buttered popcorn and sweet cream.
- Old Style Cheddar – A smooth, approachable cheddar aged five to seven months, perfect for grilled cheese, pasta, or a simple snack with apple slices.
- Cheddar Reserve – Aged two years for a bold, full-flavored cheddar experience that appeals to serious cheese lovers.
- Black Pepper Cheddar – Creamy cheddar with freshly cracked peppercorns, ideal for cocktail pairings like an Old Fashioned or Bloody Mary.
Milton Creamery’s focus is clear: support American dairy farmers while crafting cheeses that are as distinctive as the landscape they call home. Whether it’s a weekday snack or a featured plate, these cheeses bring a slice of Southern Iowa’s countryside to every table.
