Castleton Crackers Brings Old-School Charm to Modern Cheese Boards

Some snacks quietly hold the whole cheese board together. Crackers? They’re often the unsung heroes. And few brands lean into that role quite like Castleton Crackers.

The Vermont-based cracker company has built a following around artisanal crackers that feel intentionally old-school in the best way possible—rustic edges, hearty texture, and flavors designed with cheese in mind. In a snack aisle packed with ultra-processed crunch, Castleton’s handmade-inspired style feels refreshingly grounded.

The story starts with founder Whitney Lamy, an artist and baker whose fascination with food history helped shape the brand’s identity. Inspired by the origins of crackers themselves, she looked back to the early 1800s, when Massachusetts baker Josiah Bent created a thinner, lighter alternative to hardtack—the famously durable staple carried by sailors and soldiers. Bent rolled dough into thin sheets, baked it, then cracked it by hand.

Lamy adopted that same spirit in her Vermont kitchen, making crackers the traditional way for friends and family long before the brand expanded commercially. The result was a cracker that looked beautifully imperfect and tasted intentionally crafted rather than factory-made.

In 2013, Vermont Farmstead Cheese Company acquired Castleton Crackers, helping bring the brand to a wider audience while keeping its artisanal roots intact. The crackers are still made with simple, all-natural ingredients and maintain the same rustic appearance that made them stand out in the first place.

And when it comes to cheese boards, they fit right in.

The lineup covers both classic and more flavor-forward territory:

  • Salted Maple brings a sweet-salty balance that plays especially well with sharp cheddar and creamy blue cheeses.
  • Alehouse Cheddar leans savory and snacky, with a pub-style flavor that practically begs for a cold drink nearby.
  • Rosemary adds an herby, aromatic edge that works beautifully with goat cheese and bloomy rinds.
  • Simply Wheat keeps things classic and versatile for everyday pairings.
  • Sesame Graham delivers a slightly nutty sweetness that pairs surprisingly well with triple creams and fruit preserves. They’re great for s’mores too!
  • Multi Seed Rye adds crunch and earthy depth for stronger cheeses and cured meats.

There’s also something timely about the brand’s appeal right now. Cheese boards are increasingly moving toward more rustic, textured styling—less perfection, more personality. Castleton Crackers fit naturally into that aesthetic. They look handmade because, in many ways, they still honor the methods that inspired them.

For cheesemongers, hosts, and snack-board regulars, that balance of heritage and flavor is exactly what keeps these crackers in rotation. Sometimes the supporting player steals the spotlight a little.
