Cheese and Pickle Pairings

Pickles might look like a small addition to a charcuterie board, but they play an important role: acid cuts through fat and salt.

Cheese brings richness, creaminess, and plenty of savory flavor. Pickles bring acidity, crunch, and often a little sweetness or heat. Together, they create a more balanced bite while adding some much-needed texture to the board.

And with so many pickle styles available—from classic dill and sweet bread-and-butter to spicy peppers and fermented varieties—there’s plenty of room to experiment.

Pickle + Cheese Pairings to Try

Sharp Cheddar + Dill Pickles

A classic for good reason. The tangy bite of Cheddar pairs naturally with the bright, briny flavor of dill pickles. Try a sweeter dill with younger Cheddar and a bolder pickle with an aged version.

Cream Cheese + Bread-and-Butter Pickles

The mild, creamy texture of cream cheese makes a great match for the sweet-and-tangy flavor of bread-and-butter pickles. Add crackers or a toasted bagel and you have an easy snack.

Gouda + Spicy Pickles

Aged Gouda brings nutty, caramel-like flavors and enough richness to stand up to some heat. Spicy pickles add acidity and crunch while the cheese helps mellow the spice.

Brie + Cornichons

Creamy Brie and tart, crunchy cornichons are a classic combination. The pickle’s acidity keeps the buttery cheese from feeling too rich, making this an easy choice for a French-inspired board.

Feta + Olive Pickles

For a Mediterranean twist, pair salty, tangy feta with briny olive pickles. The combination delivers plenty of savory flavor, while the pickle’s acidity keeps the feta from becoming too heavy. Add tomatoes, cucumber, red onion, and a drizzle of olive oil for an easy snack or salad.

Provolone + Giardiniera

Giardiniera brings pickled peppers and vegetables, adding tang, spice, and crunch to mild provolone. The cheese softens the sharper flavors of the giardiniera, while the vegetables give the pairing plenty of texture. Try it on an antipasto platter, with crackers, or tucked into a sandwich.

You can also branch out with goat cheese and watermelon rind pickles, blue cheese and pickled ginger, or Manchego and pickled green beans.
